Books & TV Wrap Up: April 2020

Hey, hey! April went by faster than I anticipated. And it looks like I’m not alone, quite a few people tweeted the exact sentiment!

'march seemed to last 10 years but april went by so fast what the heck' - @metroiddread

What I’ve been reading

In April I had announced my participation in the Magical Readathon, which is Harry Potter-themed, and I’d set myself a modest goal of 4 books. Guess what happened?

I quit.

Now, I did put in effort to stick to the list but I got sidetracked by other things and also got put off by one of the books I was supposed to read.

If I had to sum this book up in one word it’d be: family. Morgan Matson’s contemporary romances are never just romances. They deal with solid issues and real-life challenges we may face, and this one is no exception. Save The Date had the perfect blend of love, family and heart. The family hijinks know no bounds, things go wrong at every turn and it’s got the kind of chaos only a sizeable family knows how to pull off. A lot of the frustrating and hilarious behaviour from the characters are so relateable! And the story wouldn’t be realistic without some hard-hitting growth experience, which Save The Date certainly has. It was a wild ride, I tell ya, and Morgan Matson has yet to disappoint me.

Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson - Cover

The two books by Margaret Rogerson didn’t enthrall me. Not much in Sorcery of Thorns gave that sense of wonder and elegant beauty that I found in her debut novel, An Enchantment of Ravens. Especially the way she described the paints and the lush words used. However, I do like the dark notes woven into her works, where the faerie folk and magical creatures actually look and are cruel and evil, as opposed to when something seems dark but actually isn’t. In short, she doesn’t sugarcoat the bad sides of her characters, and I like that duality. This one felt like a loooong story and the romance was pretty obvious though it took a while before it amounted to anything. The plot wasn’t particularly original and I was just waiting for it to end. There was also no real repercussion to certain aspects of the plot which kind of took the air out.

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer - Book Cover

This one. Argh. It was putting me to sleep! I was bored before the half-way mark and still trudged on, partly for the sake of the buddy-read and partly to see if things got better. I gave up in the middle because my Scribd subscription had ended and it wasn’t worth the effort. I was expecting to love it after seeing all the rave reviews, but, alas. The one good thing that came out of this was making new friends in the buddy read, I didn’t expect to have hours-long chats with them!

What I’m currently reading

You remember me saying I was going to read The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi last month? Well that’s off the table for now because I got locked out of my kindle account that had the book and after lots of back-and-forth with the Amazon customer service I still haven’t gotten my account back 😩 And now it seems that you can’t even contact the customer reps anymore!

The Dark Vault series by V. E. Schwab

This is The Archive and The Unbound in one volume, I started on the sequel recently after some reluctance(even though I greatly enjoyed the first one!) but found myself absorbed into the story soon after. How weird is that? Has that ever happened to you guys? I feel that the sequel made us understand the antagonist better, which is something I always appreciate, rather than a one-dimensional villain. There are themes of moving on after losing a love-one, distancing oneself to protect others and loneliness because you have a secret life you can’t tell others because they wouldn’t believe you. This duology is my first taste of V. E. Schwab’s works and I’m vastly enjoying her writing. Also, no suspiciously absent parents in this YA novel! 😂

    1. Loll 😆 The girl in MRIAD is annoying me to no end 😑 Like that part where she started eyeing his breakfast and didn’t make her OWN food!!
Which dramas tempted you away from this show though 😄 ?
Oh wow, I didn’t know you’ve read Spellslinger! I’m glad to hear that you’re enjoying the later books, and aren’t the covers just so awesome!? I like both editions but if I had to pick one I’d pick my edition 😁 Also, doesn’t the guy on the cover look JUST like the character?

      1. yeah OMG the girl really play on my nerves … like please girl can you go away and just leave my boys alone but at the same time i just love the way she gets protective of him…. they are cute together even though i prefer the bromance ….but since it was still airing when i started watching it i need to fill up my time and it was around that time that “eternal love in dream” has just finished airing so it was time to binge watch it cause how can i NOT… after that i was still in wuxia withdrawal so i finished “love and destiny” and now am watching ” Love of a thousand years” …. so in conclusion am still in wuxia land with no intention of leaving soon.
As for spellslinger… boy i laughed, cried and cursed with this series…. i just love the trio to bits T.T …. and yes your edition has the best cover…. god the last book cover is gold foiled T.T and i just had to get it T.T

        1. I haven’t gotten to the part where she’s protective of him, haha, so she’s only annoying 😄 lollll, you’re lost inside the wuxia world! How was Love and Destiny? It’s on my ‘watch later’ list. Gosh, I did all three with Spellslinger, too! Well, I ALMOST cried. Haha, it’s fantastic, isn’t it? I love the card theme, does that mean you have the other edition? I want to own the whole set!

    1. O h yes, I checked a few minutes of Love and Destiny and that forest of blossom trees was 0.o!! I’m watching Dilraba’s latest show so I’ll probably check out Love & Destiny later. I like both the leads of L&D so hopefully I’ll enjoy it! Idk if I’ve mentioned this before but I’ve watched the male lead in a movie series called Brotherhood of the Blades and he was so cool in it. I actually like his character with YangMi in the 2nd movie(which is actually the prequel, funnily).

Hahaha, I know that feeling! I just got The Infernal Devices cuz of the cover of the first book(SO my type). Ofc, I’m also interested in checking out Cassandra’s writing 😛

      1. ohhhhhhhhh you’re watching love design with reba and johnny? it’s on my watch list…. once i get out of wuxia land then i will give it ago…. which i don’t know when honestly cause i just keep dl those dramas XD
ohhhhhhhhhhh after you watch these and want more then i also recommend “princess silver ” and “the love by hypnotic” XD

        1. Lol, I know, when the mood hits you just can’t check out anything else 😄 I think Love Design’s plot/story is nothing to rave about, just your typical romance. I watch it for the leads, I really like them together and Reba’s acting has improved, plus she’s playing a boss-woman kind of character so it’s refreshing.

I’ve actually checked out Princess Silver before! It did not mesh with me 😂 Didn’t like the insta-love or the main characters, especially that egotistical guy! Ugh. I wanted the 2nd lead for the princess 😣 So, I quit that. As for Love by Hypnotic…the story sounds like it’s got potential(romantic wise) but I’m not sure about the leads. Nevertheless, I’ll check it out 😁 Thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming!

          1. looooooooooooool about silver princess.. but i get you Aarif (main lead) has that face that you just want to punch…. but still i just them as a couple (their romance is one that comes once in a million years) as for the 2nd and 3rd leads they both broke my heart especially Rong qi (saying that while listening to his ost)
as for love design i too will probably watch it for Riba since she is my sweetest sweetheart.
as for the romance in love by hypnotic is just EPIC… the amount of skinship and kisses just melted me and since it was a web drama the pace was fast and didn’t drag ^^

            1. HAHAHAHAHA xD I hated his character! Super arrogant.

Ironically, I just finished a kdrama, A Piece of Your Mind, that had only ONE kiss but plenty of hugs. I didn’t mind, it was a beautiful, bittersweet and warm show. It didn’t do well locally but got good reviews from int’l viewers. Idk why it did so bad in S. Korea because it didn’t have such huge flaws to warrant such low ratings.

              1. oh yeah.. i believe the reason for it’s low rating was cause Haein keeps having the same role over and over.. as well as it airing at the same time as other dramas that were more popular

                1. Ohhh, I was wondering why. That’s a shame because it was such a heartwarming and sweet show. The two main leads looked so good together, and it wasn’t just frivolous sweetness, one of the themes was overcoming grief and one-sided love. Don’t be put off by the first two episodes, personally, I thought it was very worth watching(considering how it’s already become one of my faves, haha). It slowly grew on the viewer.
