I’m joining the Magical Readathon held by G, from Book Roast, this year! Up until last year, I’ve always dismissed readathons. This one’s Harry Potter-themed, which sounds like a lot of fun!
How it works:
Every year there are two readathons, the O.W.L.s and the N.E.W.T.s. They’re ‘exams’ that you sit. For April’s readathon, we just have to focus on the O.W.L.s. You pick one career from a list of magical professions. Each career has a set of subjects you have to pass. Each subject has a book prompt. Essentially, you’re reading books based on a set of prompts, which brings me to…
Which career did I pick?

Trader of Magical Tomes!
I’m sure you can all guess what this job entails ☺ Initially, I wanted to go for Curse Breaker but the realist in me knew I couldn’t accomplish the 6 books it requires when I have ARCs and a free 1-month Scribd membership I want to avail of in April(Yes! In case you haven’t heard already, in light of the current situation, they’re giving 1-month free! No card required).
I even drew up a basic spreadsheet to help me decide based on the amount of reading that’ll be required.

The chosen books…
So, I have 4 prompts that I have to fulfill, and they are:
(click on the covers to check their Goodreads page)
A book/series that has shapeshifting…
A Curse So Dark and Lonely
A book featuring witches/wizards…
The Bone Witch
One with a white cover…

Spellslinger
A book that has a heart on the cover/in the title…

The Ticking Heart
Extra Activities
I’m also buddy reading with at least 4 others on A Curse So Dark and Lonely over on Instagram! Hit me up if you’d like to join our group read, too 😀 My instagram: @PhantomPaper
This is such a cute idea and a great motivation to tackle some of those TBR books!

Hahaha, it is, isn’t it? G from Book Roast has put in so much effort for this readathon, she even made a booklet of wizard careers, complete with descriptions and graphics! I was originally going to read All Systems Red by Martha Wells but dropped it cuz I changed my career.
What are you planning on reading in April?

😶 st-straight O’s???! My mind can’t even fathom that number.
I saw your tbr list! You never told me if you wanted to join the ACSDAL buddy read or not 🙃 It’s ok if you want to solo read though! It is so reassuring to hear only good things about Spellslinger and Bone Witch. Oooh, I can’t wait!

That’s more than 1 book a day!! +_+ Hey, it’s totally fine 😊 I just wanted to ask in case you wanted such a thing but just didn’t find it. Also, I get it cuz I chose to only buddy read for one book cuz I want to read at my own pace for some of them. Have you already started on your OWLs? I haven’t 😁😁 Gonna maybe read Love from A to Z, or something from my scribd tbr before it expires.

OMG!! A spreadsheet!!!!! LOL!!!
Even though I have no idea what any of this is about I thought you would have been a Culinary Sorcerer….
You be careful, Phantom. This all seems very dark and dangerous….

Hahaha 😁 It’s just about dangerous as you on a gloomy day, Laurence 😝 Culinary Sorcerer was also one of the contenders but I preferred the reading list for Trader of Magical Tomes. In my selected profession(lol), one of the prompts was to read a book that has a heart on the cover/title. So you proceed to find any book that you have or would like to read that fits that prompt. In my case, I chose ‘The Ticking Heart’. The prompt are all given, you don’t have to come up with one 😊

YAAAY I’m so glad you’re taking part in the OWLs! I was definitely also intrigued by the trader of magical tomes career path, it sounds absolutely perfect. I love that you made a spreadsheet about how many books are required for each career, that would have definitely come in handy because I just now realise that I’m going for a spell maker that requires 7 books to be read when I usually only manage to go through five in a month 😂 I really like A Curse so Dark and Lonely and I hope you enjoy it! Also, I’m eager to hear your thoughts on the Bone Witch because I have been eyeing it for awhile now although my hopes have slightly gone down after I tried to get into the author’s newer book, Wicked as you Wish, and ended up dnfing it 🙊

Sorry for replying this late! 😣
Haha, I like putting things into perspective like that 😁 That nerdy part of me just couldn’t resist! Guess what, I read 3 books in April and only one of them was on the OWLs list 😬 And I quit A Curse So Dark & Lonely! It just wasn’t gripping my attention, plus I found the 2 leads irritating(they got better later on though). I haven’t got to Bone Witch yet but will give you a holler when I do, I hope I enjoy it! Usually books get better the more an author writes. I’m curious, why did you DNF Wicked As You Wish? I never picked that one up cuz the synopsis didn’t interest me. I’m gonna go see how you did in the OWLs readathon, hopefully you did better! 😄

Love seeing people participate in this one, I feel like everyone accomplishes so much diverse reading through these. Excellent picks too. I think De Castell’s book is what I hope you enjoy so it can confirm my need to read his 3 musqueteer-inspired series someday! 😛 Happy reading! 😀

Oh, you’ve got a point there! It does push you to read out of your circle a bit bit still giving you enough control so you don’t absolutely HATE it 😄 Thanks, I DID enjoy De Castell’s book!! It was good fun with a heavier topic thrown in. I would love to know your thoughts on it whenever you get the chance, it’d be fun to see if it had any criticisms or clever parts that just slipped my notice.

I think this readathon is a great reason to stop ignoring readathons, it is so cute and I love watching people participate each year. Happy reading!

Hahaha, YES! You’re so right! Even if I didn’t manage to stick to it properly I still think this is a cute and wonderful readathon, especially if you have the time and actively participate. Thank you for the well-wishes! (btw, which readathons have you joined/is your favorite?)
